On the 30th of March 2022, Peru secured their spot for the FIFA intercontinental playoff, giving Peruvian fans yet another opportunity to watch their national team on the international stage. Peru played Paraguay in their most recent South American World Cup Qualification Playoff in what many would describe as a sloppy encounter. Both countries, like the rest of South America, are passionate about football, so finishing fifth in the CONMEBOL table was crucial for both the teams and their fans. Despite all of the fouls and missed opportunities, Peru won 2-0, creating an incredible atmosphere in the stadium and the Peruvian capital, Lima. Fans ecstatic over the victory and their position in the table took their celebrations to the streets of Lima, where bands harmonised with the city and flares lit up the dark alleyways, symbolising Peru's possible return to the World Cup.
The Blanquirrojos will face the Socceroos or UAE on June 13th, 2022, in what should be an intense yet memorable match. The last time Peru encountered Australia was during the group stage in the 2018 Russia World Cup, where Peru’s World Cup journey had come to an end. Peruvian fans were able to depart Russia enjoying their final group stage victory, while the Socceroos' hopes of making it to the last 16 were crushed. The 2-0 loss to Peru devastated Australian fans, implying that a meeting between the two teams will renew an intensity worth watching. Qualifying via the intercontinental playoff against Australia would put Peru on the same path the team took four years ago. The playoff determines who will join Group D, which includes the teams France, Denmark, and Tunisia. Peru in the last World Cup was drawn into Group C which consisted of the teams France, Denmark and Australia, meaning Peru could play all teams they had played in the 2018 FIFA Russia World Cup. However, could this mean that the team could face the same obstacles and fate they did the last time round?

France vs Peru
When Peru faced France in 2018, little did they know that The Blues would go on to win the tournament and gain their second World Cup title. Although the game resulted in Peru being sent home, the Blanquirrojos were still able to challenge the French team, which allowed Peru to go home just 1-0 down to the 1998 and soon to be 2018 World Cup winners. Although Peru were able to start with their top players, including captain Paolo Guerrero and record-breaking Luis Advincula, they fell short and weren’t enough to knock out the French team. During the game, Mbappé made history in becoming the second teenager to score at a World Cup, after Pelé in 1958, as well as becoming the youngest French player to score a winning goal at a World Cup.
Denmark vs Peru
Peru’s first group stage match in 2018 was against Denmark, a strong European team consisting of players such as Christian Eriksen, Kasper Schmeichel and Yussuf Poulsen. Both teams gave an incredible performance; however, many viewers argued that luck and fate were on Denmark’s side after Peru’s penalty misfortune. Just before the end of the first half, Peru were given a penalty after a VAR review. Once the penalty was awarded, the crowd supporting the South American team went wild, and screams of joy echoed from one side of the Mordovia Arena to the other. Christian Cueva was left devastated after becoming the first Peruvian to miss a penalty at a World Cup, after the country experienced a 36-year absence from the tournament.
When speaking to Edison Flores, Peruvian Midfielder, after Peru were sent home from the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He discussed his sympathy for his teammates and their supporters. However, the Peruvian national star was able to share his hopes and optimism, and said during talks: “Si igual de triste aún nada está dicho así que con Fe hasta el último”.
He further expressed his faith in his team and hopes it will get them to Qatar this coming winter, “De todas manneras con Fe’.
However, will faith help the Peruvian team to better their possible performance up against Denmark and France. Ricardo Gareca, Peru Manager, also known as ‘El Tigre’ will be pushing his players to excel in all sets of skill to better their chances of winning both the intercontinental playoff and the group stage’s first match. Either way the Blancoyrojo fans will be cheering on their national team, and proudly sing the national anthem wherever their team takes them.
