Over the past year, NBA fans have experienced their fair share of ups and downs with players across both conferences. However, witnessing the rise of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokić has been nothing short of spectacular, especially considering that these two players were once considered outsiders. The emergence of two European players at the pinnacle of a sport predominantly dominated by Americans for the past 75 years brings an exhilarating twist to the game. While some may find this shift unexpected, it undeniably adds a refreshing touch of diversity to the NBA, setting it apart from other sporting events and teams around the world.

Here's what you need to know about the top contenders for the NBA MVP 2021/22:

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Also known as “The Greek Freak,” Giannis was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks back in 2013 and has made a significant impact over the past few years. His basketball journey began in 2007 in Athens, Greece, where he played for Filathlitikos in the semi-pro Greek B Basketball League. After turning 18, he was signed by the Spanish club CAI Zaragoza on a four-year contract. During the 2012-2013 Greek A2 League season, he averaged 9.5 points per game over 26 matches and was honoured by his coaches, earning a special guest spot at the Greek League All-Star Game.

Upon entering the NBA after his semi-pro stint, Giannis signed his rookie contract with the Bucks and has since enjoyed a highly successful nine-year career with the franchise. Making his debut at just 18 years and 311 days old, Giannis was one of the youngest NBA players at the time. Despite a slight drop in his average points per game during his first season in the NBA, Giannis demonstrated remarkable development and skill over the years.

From 2014 to 2016, Antetokounmpo exhibited continuous improvement, culminating in a four-year contract extension worth $100 million. This extension marked the beginning of his top-level performances, with his stats skyrocketing in subsequent seasons. With the Bucks evolving into a formidable team, led by Giannis and complemented by players like Khris Middleton, he became a dominant force in the league.

Under the guidance of coach Mike Budenholzer in 2018, the Bucks embarked on a successful season, with Giannis receiving numerous accolades, including multiple Eastern Conference Player of the Month awards and his first NBA MVP title. Although the Bucks fell short in the Eastern Conference Finals, Giannis's exceptional performance did not go unnoticed.

The pinnacle of Giannis's career came in the 2020/21 season when he led the Bucks to their first NBA Championship since 1971, defeating the Phoenix Suns in a thrilling six-game series. Despite suffering a knee injury during the Eastern Conference Finals, Giannis returned to lead his team to victory, earning the Finals MVP title with his outstanding performance.

Giannis's journey from a promising rookie to a two-time NBA MVP and NBA Champion has solidified his status as one of the league's finest players. As the Bucks currently rank fifth in the Eastern Conference, fans eagerly anticipate Giannis's leadership to propel them towards another championship run.

Nikola Jokić

Known as “The Joker,” Nikola Jokić began his basketball career in his native Serbia, joining KK Mega Basket in 2012. Although his initial season was primarily spent with the junior team, Jokić's talent soon shone through. In the following season, he made significant strides, showcasing his skills in both the Adriatic League and the Serbian League.

Drafted as the 41st overall pick in 2014, Jokić continued to hone his abilities in Serbia before making his NBA debut with the Denver Nuggets in 2015. His impressive performance in the NBA Summer League solidified his position as a key player for the Nuggets. Throughout his tenure with the team, Jokić has consistently delivered strong performances, demonstrating his prowess as both a center and power forward.

Jokić's offensive style, characterised by his unique blend of strength and finesse, sets him apart on the court. His exceptional passing ability and offensive efficiency have earned him accolades such as the NBA MVP title in 2021 and multiple appearances in the NBA All-Star Game.

As Jokić continues to refine his skills and elevate his game, fans can expect to witness further brilliance on the court. With each passing season, he has demonstrated remarkable improvement, evolving into one of the league's top scorers. As anticipation builds for the upcoming All-Star Game and beyond, basketball enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await Jokić's contributions to the sport.

The 2021/22 NBA season has brought to the forefront two remarkable talents in Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokić. Their journey from relative obscurity to becoming household names in the basketball world is a testament to their dedication, skill, and unwavering determination. As these two players continue to redefine the boundaries of the game, they not only inspire fans worldwide but also pave the way for a new era of diversity and excellence in the NBA. With their leadership, the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets stand poised for success, and basketball enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the thrilling moments that lie ahead in the remainder of the season and beyond.
